I’m happy buying detergent honestly - it last a LONG time when you actually use the correct amount per load. I think the real crime is the “measuring caps” on liquid detergent basically tricking everyone into using WAY too much detergent. Most washers will recommend 1-2 tablespoons of detergent maximum for heavily soiled loads… Most measuring caps are over that even at the first of several marks, and people rarely think they need the minimum (moar soap moar clean, right?) - so people tend to add 5-10 times the detergent they need.

I worked in appliances for about ten years, and not a single washer manufacturer would actually recommend using fabric softener. It horribly gums up the workings of the machine, even when you use the tiny amount you are actually supposed to (which most people use way too much). They are (or were originally) basically just animal fats and emulsifiers with some fragrance thrown in. They smell awful when they are left stuck somewhere for a long time (like the outer walls of the inner tub of your washing machine - seriously, it probably looks furry if you opened it up to see).

I can’t speak to what it does to your clothes specifically, but I can imagine several downsides to essentially coating fabric in lavender scented industrial mayonnaise.

Vague complaints about compatibility issues that don’t hold much water (and unable or unwilling to share any details); vaguely complicated solutions, presented as if they are dangerous, from “untrustworthy” sources; and finally claiming windows doesn’t have any of that (bet you have no similar concerns about using regedit… and you only follow the advice of official Microsoft Tech Support, right?).

I think you guys have hit the nail on the head. So much of the Linux argument has nothing to do with Linux and everything to do with what people already know.

Everyone forgets the bugs and crashes they’ve always had to deal with even exist, because they become background noise. Then they change to a new OS and might run into completely new “roadblocks” and cry about how broken and useless the OS is even though their new problems are just as minor (or more so) than the problems they left behind.

In reality, any OS is a complicated piece of kit. The more you do with it, the more likely you are going to run into something that does something you don’t expect - and the more tech literate you believe yourself to be, the more likely you think the OS doing something you don’t expect means it is broken.

You sound like the exact person this meme is about… Having installed both windows and Linux each several times in the last 5 years, the process has been significantly easier for Linux every time.

I really can’t answer that either I’m afraid, as I’m using one of the “gaming distros” (Garuda Linux) and just haven’t had anything but good luck with it really. I tried Bazzite on my laptop, but was having some nvidia driver issues and decided to try Garuda before diving into trying to fix it and, well, Garuda “just worked”. The last general use distro I used was Manjaro probably 5ish years ago and I hated it, had nothing but troubles (and have since learned that Manjaro is kind of notorious for falling apart).

I haven’t had to do this for a single game I’ve played. Am I lucky? What does “gamemode” do? (Am I missing out on something?)

The worst I’ve had to do to get a game to work was change to “Proton Experimental” in the compat settings for one game that had basically just launched. (I also remember the EA launcher being terrible when I played “It Takes Two” with my partner, but I don’t remember what was terrible about it and also remember them having problems on Windows so I don’t know if it should count or not, lol). My partner is still using Windows, and we game together a lot, and honestly I think they have games crash far more often than I do. Games take longer to launch for me though - “Processing Vulkan Shaders” takes up to a minute or two if it is the first launch since boot of a larger game. No idea what happens if I skip it, so I don’t.

It’s honestly been such a breath of fresh air, I am so grateful for the talented people making this shit work so well, especially in the last several years.

They spend like half the page sucking themselves off over how great of a job they did designing their own logo, and then the other half telling the user the proper way to reference the company and its products. I use Notepad on my work computer daily. I never save any documents, but it is handy for a quick copy/paste of info I need for a short period of time. We aren’t allowed to install anything on the computers, so it’s what is available.

I could live without it, but I do find it marginally useful, basically as digital “scrap paper”.

I mean, Grandma ain’t cleaning up the myriad of shit windows leaves clogging drives either… I see the real problem is going to be the average $12/hr geek squad agent isn’t going to be able to fix it for Grandma no matter how eager she is to pay $199.

I personally love Alexandrite.app as a UX. I’m so used to it that I get confused when I follow a link and see a default Lemmy instance, lol.

My laptop has a 3050 in it running Garuda Linux under Wayland and its been working well without any fuss. I tried bazzite but the drivers put me on the struggle bus… It never would leave “hybrid mode” and trying to play a game just wouldn’t touch the dgpu so performance would be igpu trash mode.

I’d love to know what is different between garuda and bazzite to try to get bazzite to work as I did really like it, but it eluded me. I guess my point is that you might have better luck trying a different distro unfortunately. It feels like there are enough variables that what works for me may not for you and vice versa.
