The cops didn’t receive any punishment because the judge said the cops were scared and that it was OK for them to shoot up the car that didn’t match the description (Blue truck versus white / grey, different manufacturer) and contained people who didn’t match the description (Asian women versus black man).
It gets even BETTERER though. That wasn’t the only vehicle they stopped that blatantly didn’t match the description and they still used violence to stop.
It’s just the default stance. Kind of like assuming everyone on the road is a bad driver and driving defensively as a result. It’s safer to assume every cop you interact with is actively looking for a way to screw you over, will lie to you and will violate your rights given the opportunity. Even if it’s just most, or hell even rare that cops are bastards it only takes one interaction with one to have life altering consequences.
That way you can defend your rights and be pleasantly surprised on the rare opportunity you encounter one who isn’t a bastard, rather than be constantly disappointed (and possibly in jail or dead).

I mean, they exhausted all their options over the last 21 years and were told in 2018 they should get ready to depart. They then stayed another 4 years anyways after they exhausted all their options and knew if it was going to be enforced they were going to be deported.
The only reason they can claim about raising a family is specifically because the system gave them an huge amount of time to sort things out. But that doesn’t mean the time is, or should be, indefinite.
For all the people literally being grabbed off the streets for a traffic ticket or an op ed article, a couple being given 21 years of litigation and almost 40 years of time here to sort out their status before ignoring the unfavorable outcome doesn’t sound like this just dropped out of the sky.
So what should they have done in there intervening 25 years after receiving a voluntary departure order? Just hope it goes away or is never enforced?
I had the same reaction. Especially considering who your actual character is that feels a bit… Weird.
I mean this isn’t someone trying to import in nickel or any other element. He was shipping highly radioactive and toxic material around. It’s typically frowned on to expose people to radiation for the sake of you completing a collection.

At the surface level, but there’s more to it than that. Transplants don’t work by taking a number and waiting, they assess the person’s current condition as well. Since he waited and tried to cure cancer with fruit he fucked his liver and basically got to skip the line in another state. This was only possible because he had the transportation necessary. It’s not an option you or I could use and say, just book a flight.
That also means that someone in a slightly better condition (But mind you, still needing a new liver) would have been passed over in their own state.

DIY juice is easy to make and takes very little experience. Recipes are available online and you mix by weight. It does take some safety precautions as nicotine concentrate is very poisonous, but if you don’t want nic all you need is PG, VG, and flavoring.
I started DIYing years ago and never looked back. The only large initial cost is the nicotine, which you buy in concentrate, but the overall cost when you make your juice is cheap as hell. The rate I go through it I have decades of nicotine and my cost per ml is ~6 cents. Most of that cost is the nicotine.
